¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?

Hey! What's going on in French class?  Actually, our class was transformed into a beginner Spanish class for Country Week as we all studied the country of Chile! All classes came to the French room to learn and practice basic Spanish expressions. We noted how similar the French and Spanish languages are.

However, we did manage to sneak in a little French this week during the Gr. 7/8 French club. Students enjoyed decorating and eating la bûche de Noël.

Here's some ingredients. Students were divided into two groups; one with a vanilla roll above and the other, with chocolate.

Back to our vanilla team. A friendly rivalry is developing over presentation!

Each roll is covered with chocolate icing to mimic the look of bark; hence the yule log!

Garnishes add the finishing touch.

Bravo to all teams! Les bûches de Noël sont complètement délicieuses!

Student-Led Conferences

Our student-led conferences are Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14 and 15. Here we are, reading our final projects aloud with various partners in preparation for the presentation of our projects to our parents: 

Grades 4 and 5

Grades 5 and 6

Grades 7 and 8

Fantastic work, everyone! Gr. 7 and 8 students will be continuing their Dragon's Den presentations and Grades 4, 5 and 6 will be reviewing verbs until Country Week. 

The second group of Gr. 7/8 students enjoyed making and feasting on chocolate fondue! If you'd like the recipe, please see last week's post.

Fondue!!!

Yes, French club for Grade 7 and 8 started today and will continue for the next seven weeks. Our first culinary venture will be of course, fondue! French club gives us the opportunity to extend our learning of the French language and appreciate culture in a very tangible way.

God could have created food to all have the same colour, texture and flavour and it still would have met our nutritional requirements. Instead, He created amazing flavours, textures and colours of food to show us how good He is.  Fondue is proof of that!

This week, the Gr. 7/8 class has been continuing their "Dragon's Den" presentations. Grade 4/5 and 5/6 have been reading aloud their written work, "Une personne importante dans ma vie" in preparation for student-led conferences next week.

Finally, où est le drapeau français? I hid it somewhere in the class after school Friday! Let's see who finds it Monday...

Dragon's Den...and a surprise visitor!

Over a week ago we were surprised by a special guest in Grade 7 and 8...

 Moe Leggett of our Winnipeg Blue Bombers!

Moe came to read to our school for our "I Love to Read" month; however, he found time in his busy schedule that day to come by to our French classroom as well. He shared that he is currently learning Spanish and we discussed some of the similarities and differences between the two languages.  Thank you, Moe, for encouraging us in our language learning pursuits!  Moe performed with one of our students in the RWB's Nutcracker ballet this past Christmas.

Our Gr. 7 and 8's have almost completely finished their "Dragon's Den" scripts--our writing that describes inventions that each student will bring before a panel of "dragons" who are fellow classmates. In our unit, each student will take turns being an entrepreneur as well as a dragon, presenting an invention and asking questions to classmates about their inventions. We've been busy this week putting the finishing touches on our writing as well as preparing questions.  Prototypes of inventions can be 2 or 3-dimensional. Here's a preview of a few of the inventions that will be presented:

The Grades 4-6 have finished their projects on "Une personne importante dans ma vie". Most have been practicing reading their projects and some will be posted on our French bulletin board outside the office.

This week we also said, "Au revoir, février!"

We'll see who finds the French flag on Monday! This activity gives us a good opportunity to practice using our mots interrogatifs when asking questions about the flag's location in French--we can't always see it from our desks so we have to use our words to help find it!
