Looking for a great day camp for Spring Break?

Next week we will be studying the country of China as our focus for "Country Week". We will therefore not have regular French classes.

Spring break is almost upon us...and there is a wonderful option for families if you are looking for a spring (or summer) day camp for children ages 6-14 at the University of Saint Boniface! Please click on this link for more information:

A taste of francophone culture...

Today students in grades 3-8 sampled some pea soup, bannock with butter and jam and maple syrup! Here are some glimpses of the Grade 7-8 class!

Here is the recipe used for the pea soup, below.

Bonne fin de semaine!

Mme Christensen

Pea Soup

2 1/4 cups dried split peas
8 cups water

Pea Soup

2 1/4 cups dried split peas
8 cups water
1 large onion
1 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 tsp pepper
1 smoked pork hock, 2 lbs. (try Miller's meats!) or 1 ham bone
3 medium carrots, chopped into small pieces
1-2 tablespoons summer savory
salt and maple syrup to taste

Heat peas and water to boiling in stock pot.  Boil uncovered 2 minutes; remove from heat and let stand one hour.

Stir in onion, celery and pepper.  Add pork hock/ham bone.  Heat to boiling; reduce heat and cover and simmer about 1 1/2 hours or until peas are tender.

Remove pork hock/ham bone; trim meat and cut into 1/2" pieces.  Stir ham and carrots into soup.  Heat to boiling.  Reduce heat; cover and simmer until carrots are tender and soup is of desired consistency, about 30 minutes. Add maple syrup and salt to taste.

Young entrepreneurs!

In inventions unit, our Grade 7/8 class has been learning in French about why inventions come into being--necessity is truly the mother of invention! We have inventoried our classroom environment en français, identifying the many inventions that we are currently blessed with that make our lives easier and why our lives are easier as a result.

We have also assessed our environment for our needs that are not currently addressed by a specific invention and with our ingenuity and creativity, devised gadgets that could help us.

We have been writing about our inventions, identifying:

  • what need our invention is adressing
  • who are target market will be in the classroom (students, teachers, others) using the futur proche verb tense
  • how our invention will help them, using the futur proche verbe tense
  • the name of our invention
  • mechanical parts of the invention
  • how to use the device (using the imperative forms of verbs)
  • one final, short statement to "sell" the device
Some examples of prototypes are below in a 2D or 3D format:

Bravo, mes élèves! In future posts I will be featuring school design projects from the Gr. 5/6 class and Gr. 3/4 projects "Mon pupitre" (My desk).

Bonne semaine,

Mme Christensen
