What to do in French over the summer...

How about a tour of Saint Boniface? It's a lovely walk from the Forks over the Esplanade Riel into the heart of Saint Boniface!

Provencher Boulevard

Try a French restaurant and visit the boutiques of Saint Boniface!

Don't forget to pick up a few books from the French library for a good read at home.  The Saint Boniface Library has an excellent selection for readers of all levels.

All public libraries have French books I'm sure.  However, this library has a broad selection of books, audio books, CD's, DVD's and magazines in French.  The library books that I have borrowed for our classroom use have come from this library which is at the corner of Provencher and Tache, near the Esplanade Riel, pictured above.  The upstairs portion of the library offers a lovely area to read with a panoramic view of the Red River.

Click on this link for a very detailed list of francophone cultural attractions in and around our city and province: events, festivals, shops, services, boutiques, restaurants, museums, guided tours and more!

I wish you all a wonderful summer holiday.  Bonnes vacances!

Papa, tu es super!

Joyeuse fête des pères!

Hey mom--do you think dad will like it?

Students had a choice between the logo "Papa" or simply "S".

The word "super" is a mot-ami, (word friend) as it is a cognate; it looks similar to its equivalent in English.  Did you know that approximately 40% of words in French and in English are mots-amis?

That makes learning French a lot easier than some other languages for us!

The unassuming red plaid shirt...

et voilà!

It was fun creating the shirts; the students came up with some very original designs!

However you spend Father's Day with your dad, may it be a joyful one.  May God bless all the fathers!

Bonne fin de semaine,

It's a fondue party!

It's the appropriate way to bring our year to a close!

Here's the recipe for our fondue...

Chocolate Fondue

Ingredients
  • Strawberries
  • bite-size chunks of banana
  • bite-size chunks of kiwifruit
  • bite-size chunks of pineapple
  • any fruit, actually!
  • bite-size cubes of cake
  • crispy rice squares
  • chips
  • pretzels
  • pickles--a sweet and sour experience for the daring!

Chocolate Fondue:
  • 1 cup (250 mL) milk chocolate chips or semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup (150 mL) whipping cream
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) vanilla
Put chocolate chips into medium heatproof bowl.

Pour cream into small saucepan; heat over medium-high heat until hot and steaming but not boiling. Remove from heat.

Carefully pour hot cream over chocolate chips; let stand for 2 minutes.

Add vanilla; whisk until smooth (about 2 minutes).

Scrape into mini slow cooker or fondue pot. Keep warm on low setting.  Makes approx. 1 1/4 cups.

Bon appétit!

Outdoor Adventures

This past week our project presentations for Grades 6, 7 and 8 were in full swing.  Grade Six students developed plans for a classmate in one of Canada's national parks, describing the park as well as accomodations, meals and activities.  Grade Seven and Eight students each designed an outdoor adventure company that gives two types of tours depending on the needs/wishes of potential clients.

Here are some Grade Six projects:

Now for some Grade Seven and Eight projects.  I've tried to include some close-ups on the information in the projects.

We will continue with more project presentations this week!

Bonne semaine!

For the love of reading...en français!

During one of our French classes this past week we were outside, participating in our school's Read-a-thon!  Some students enjoyed the French early readers from the Saint Boniface public library.

The reading continued throughout the week. Our Grade Threes were some of the first students ready to read and present their animal projects to their classmates.

Some students chose to put their project in book format...

...and others chose a small poster format.  Bravo, tout le monde!

Our project presentations will continue this week.

Bonne semaine!
