In defence of animals...

Our Gr. 4-6 students expressed a number of opinions why the bat is such an important creature:

On the opposite side of the class are the number of students not in favour of the bat : )

Those in favour of the pig are:

And those not in favour...

We will continue our conversations in French next week in defense of ostriches, sharks and wolves!

Grade 7 and 8 students will begin writing their recipes for our class recipe book.  We've already looked at simple recipes in French for crepes, Rice Krispie Squares, smoothies and sandwiches that can be adapted to create our own version.

We were happy to have Mme Arla Strauss, educational consultant from le Bureau de l'éducation française, visit our classes this past Thursday to observe the implementation of the new French communication and culture curriculum!

Bonne fin de semaine,

Mme Christensen

Il fait froid! It's cold out!

The images of mugs of hot chocolate will hopefully help us feel warmer when we come in from recess!  Here is our calendrier:

Our "mini-prof" questions the class about the date, weather, season and any favorite winter activities. Students are very good about expressing their opinions about whether or not they think it is cold, cool or quite nice outside.

Grade Seven and Eight students are working on adaptations to recipes to help prepare them to create a recipe of their own for our class recipe book. This week we looked at a recipe in French for Rice Krispies squares and adapted the recipe by adding two new ingredients.  We also learned vocabulary to describe the measurements of ingredients for recipes.

Grade Four/Five class have been practicing reading aloud the text "La Grande Course" which is a version of "The Tortoise and the Hare".  The Grade Five/Six class has analyzed this text, searching for "mots amis"(words that are similar in meaning and pronunciation as English words), "faux amis" (the opposite of 'mots amis'), familiar words, adjectives, and words with the accents é and è.

Both classes have also been creating birthday cards for students that have birthdays soon!

It has been great to get back to routines in the New Year.  Stay warm!

Bonne fin de semaine,

Mme Christensen

A short week in review

Bonne année!

We come back to a short week spent in review of the work prior to Christmas break. Grade 4/5 students have been describing animals and beginning to read a comic strip based on the "Tortoise and the Hare".

Grade 5/6 students are continuing to read this comic strip aloud and look for certain words such as "mots amis" and "faux amis".  Grades 7/8 students received back their tests on crêpe recipe directions and reviewed verbs in the imperative.

Now that we're back from break, it's time to get back to thinking and speaking in French! Here are some of the common phrases we use in French class for real-life situations.

To use the washroom:

"Est-ce que je peux aller à la toilette, s'il vous plaît?"

To go get a drink of water:

"Est-ce que je peux aller boire de l'eau, s'il vous plaît?"

To borrow a pencil:

"Est-ce que je peux emprunter un crayon, s'il vous plaît?"

To have a sheet of paper:

"Est-ce que je peux avoir une feuille de papier, s'il vous plaît?"

Finally, what to say if you simply don't know:

"Madame, je ne sais pas!"

Bonne fin de semaine!
