More projects!

This past week we worked hard at completing our animals projects in Grades 3, 4 and 5.  We're almost done!

As promised, here are some Grade 4 projects that have been completed this week:

Perry le lézard

Homer le chien

Pete, l'ornithorynque

Lebron la tortue

Rouge le panda

Tigre, le tigre

Happy la gorille

Jaxen le léopard

These are the projects that I'll post for now.  Un très bel effort, mes élèves! Many who finished their projects enjoyed reading short booklets from the Saint Boniface public library which has a great selection of material for early readers.

I hope to post work from Grades 6, 7 and 8 students soon!

I'd also like to remind families that our kit of materials from the Canadian Parents for French is still available for lending.  Please come by the French room to view and borrow the materials.

Among our school's Read-a-thon prize baskets on display in the school hall, there is a basket containing a lovely French picture dictionary and a copy of Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" in French.  Be sure to remember this basket when submitting your tickets!

Bonne fin de semaine tout le monde,

Mme Christensen

Projects!

This past week all classes began or continued work on their projects with the Gr. 3-5 students working on their animals projects and the Gr. 6-8 students working on their outdoor adventure projects.

Grade 7 and 8 students are hard at work.

We used the bilingual websites of Parks Canada.

Some animal projects from Grades 3-5 have actually been completed. Bravo!

Here is an example of a Grade 3 project on a monkey:

The next three projects are done by Grade 5 students; there is more detail at this level. Here is a composition about a pony, Mimmy:

Even a teddy bear snuck into our compositions!

An adorable hippo joined our discussions as well.

I hope to post some Grade 4 work soon.  Keep up the great work, mes élèves!

À bientôt!

Projects: Animals and our Canadian National Parks

These days as our thoughts turn towards summer, we look to our Canadian national parks for inspiration in French class.  Information about our national parks is available in both our official languages and we are using this website for project research in Grades 6, 7 and 8.

Grade Six students will be designing an outdoor adventure for a classmate in one of our national parks.  Grade Seven and Eight students will be designing an outdoor adventure company which runs activities in a national park of their choice.  We will be starting our projects this week.

I've been sharing some of photos from Riding Mountain National Park as well.

J'aime faire une randonnée en kayak!

J'adore regarder et admirer les fleurs sauvages.

Les bisons à Lac Audy sont incroyables.

Ahh! Regarde ce petit veau adorable! (Taken with a zoom lens from the safety of a vehicle, of course!)

Speaking of animals, the Grades 3, 4 and 5 students will be starting their projects on an animal of their choice this week.  Grade 3 students will use the verb "être" and "avoir"  to describe each animal in full sentences. Grade 4 students will add a sentence describing what their animal says and why they like the animal they have chosen.  Grade 5 students will build on this and use some verbs describing what their animal likes to eat and do.

Parents and students, please feel free to stop by the French room to view and borrow materials on loan to us from the Canadian Parents for French (CPF).  We have these materials until the beginning of June.

Have a lovely May long weekend! Bonne fin de semaine!

Joyeuse Fête des Mères! Happy Mother's Day!

This week all classes were busy making Mother's Day cards in French. Great job, tout le monde!

I wish a happy Mother's Day to all of the wonderful moms of our students here at school and to all mothers!

Bonne fin de semaine,

Mme Christensen

Winnipeg International Storytelling Festival and a Mystery Box

This week our Grade 6 class had the great privilege of attending a French story workshop and show at the University of Saint-Boniface, the venue for the Festival international du conte de Winnipeg.  The English part of this festival takes place in various parts of Winnipeg and is in its tenth year.  Nearly forty storytellers perform for around 8000 students each year.  The festival was begun by the Arthur V. Mauro Center for Peace and Justice of St. Paul's College, University of Manitoba.

Our story workshop introduced us to the themes in the story show, "La Guerre et la paix" ("War and Peace").

Our facilitator briefly discussed the five steps of the grieving process: nier (denial), se fâcher (anger), négocier (negotiation), être déprimé (depression) et accepter (acceptance).  We went on to participate in games and activities that helped us, in a light-hearted way, to understand the grieving process.

As a class we participated in a small war of our own in the form of the game, "Rock, paper, scissors". Students were divided into two groups and each group discussed whether they would be rock, paper or scissors for each round.  We kept score and when the game was over, we discussed our feelings about winning or losing.

Roche, papier ou ciseaux???  Students did a fine job participating in French to the best of their abilities!

Students were divided into two groups to practice the dialogue above as we passed around a squeaky rat stuffy and afterward, a cat stuffy.  We used expression in our voices to demonstrate denial, anger, negotiation, depression and acceptance.  We also practiced vocal expressions in a simple dialogue of "Oui" and "Non" which was a lot of fun!

We practiced short dialogues related to the theme of the story play. Students were grouped behind the student in green and one asked him a question, disguising his/her voice. The student in green had to answer in a full sentence and guess the name of the person questioning him.  If he guessed correctly, he stayed up at the front. If he did not guess correctly, he was replaced by the person who disguised his voice successfully. We had some great laughs!

Sample dialogue

Next, we watched the story show, "La Guerre et la Paix", which centered around two characters who were preparing to participate in a peace march and in the process suffered a major setback in their preparations!  We observed how they dealt with their own personal conflict and worked through the stages of grief in this very humorous presentation.

A huge thank you to the parents who helped to provide the necessary transportation for this event!

THE MYSTERY BOX

QU'EST-CE QUE C'EST?!?!?!?

This box arrived to the French classroom and will be with us for the next four weeks.  Well, I'll let you know what it is...it is a multi-media kit of materials on loan to us from the CPF, or Canadian Parents for French.  Any parents, students or staff are welcome to sign out books, CD's, DVD's or games.  Please come to the French classroom to borrow materials! On the right hand side of this blog there is a link to the CPF, a wonderful organization which promotes the learning of French.

Bonne fin de semaine et joyeuse fête de Mères! Happy Mother's Day!
